Sydney New Year's Eve

Sydney throws the biggest New Year's Eve party in the country, and one of the first major midnight celebrations in the world each year. More than a million people ring the harbour for the 9pm family fireworks and the main midnight display, when the Harbour Bridge becomes the centrepiece of a show watched by a global television audience of many millions.

What to expect

Vantage points range from free foreshore parks and headlands to ticketed venues, harbour cruises and restaurants. The best free spots fill from early morning on the 31st, so committed spectators arrive with picnic rugs and patience. If fireworks over water are on your list, this is the definitive Australian version.
