Royal Melbourne Show
Last week of September into early October (11 days)
The Royal Melbourne Show brings the country to the city for 11 days each September at the Melbourne Showgrounds in Ascot Vale. Victoria's biggest annual community event draws around 430,000 people for livestock and equestrian competition, the animal nursery, showbags, carnival rides and nightly arena entertainment.
It has run since 1848 and remains a genuine agricultural show beneath the carnival: the judging rings, produce halls and woodchop arena are where its heart is. The show straddles the school holidays, so weekdays early in the run are the calmer choice. Trains run direct to the Showgrounds station.
