Melbourne International Comedy Festival
Late March to mid-April (approx. 3.5 weeks)
The Melbourne International Comedy Festival is one of the three largest comedy festivals in the world, alongside Edinburgh and Montreal. For about three and a half weeks from late March, the Town Hall and dozens of venues across the city host hundreds of shows a night, from arena headliners to debut hours in tiny rooms.
Attendances top 770,000, and the festival has launched most careers in Australian comedy. Cheap Tuesdays, preview pricing and the nightly Festival Club keep it affordable, and the free Gala broadcast sets up the program's stars. Taking a punt on an unknown room is the festival's real sport.
