Melbourne International Film Festival
The Melbourne International Film Festival is one of the oldest film festivals in the world, screening since 1952. For the first three weeks of August, cinemas across the city run hundreds of features, documentaries and shorts, spanning world premieres, restorations and the festival's flagship Australian program.
What to expect
Around 250,000 admissions make it the country's biggest film event. The program rewards browsing: mini-passes make it easy to stack several films a day, and the festival lounge keeps the conversation going between sessions. August in Melbourne is made for cinemas, and MIFF is the city at its most Melbourne.
