Melbourne Fringe
Melbourne Fringe is the city's open-access festival, running about 18 days each October with hundreds of shows spanning comedy, theatre, circus, cabaret, art and things that resist category. Anyone can register a show, which is precisely the point: it is where independent artists take risks and audiences find things first.
What to expect
Around 400,000 attendances spread across venues from Trades Hall to bars, warehouses and living rooms. Tickets are cheap, most shows run under an hour, and stacking three in a night is standard practice. The program rewards curiosity over planning; the best Fringe stories start with a show picked on a whim.
