What to know before you go.
The Sydney–Newcastle train is faster (2 hours 40 minutes) and runs every 30 minutes; for most travellers it is the better choice on this corridor. The bus wins if you are starting from near Central Station and want a direct service to Newcastle Interchange without changing at Hornsby. NSW TrainLink coaches connect with their north coast services, so this is also the first leg if you are heading further north to Coffs Harbour or Byron Bay. Friday afternoon services northbound are the busiest of the week; book a day ahead at minimum.
