Travel tips
The overnight is the right call here: daytime services arrive in Byron after dark, which is no fun if you are checking into a hostel for the first time. Book at least 10 days ahead for the East Coast Blues & Roots Festival (Bluesfest, Easter), Splendour in the Grass (July) and Schoolies Week (late November); all three sell the corridor out. Greyhound and Premier hop-on hop-off passes start to make sense if you are going beyond Byron: Brisbane, Gold Coast or Cairns. The Byron Bay arrival point is on Jonson Street, two minutes' walk from Main Beach and the cluster of hostels around Carlyle Street.
