The Ekka, formally the Royal Queensland Show, is Queensland's biggest annual event: nine days in August when the bush comes to Brisbane. Around 400,000 people pass through the Brisbane Showgrounds for livestock judging, the animal nursery, woodchop, showbags, sideshow alley and the nightly main-arena program.
Running since 1876, the Ekka gave Brisbane its beloved traditions of the strawberry sundae and the August "Ekka westerlies". People's Day, the second Wednesday, is a Brisbane public holiday and the show's busiest day. The showgrounds sit at Bowen Hills, one train stop or a short walk from the CBD.
