The Pacific Highway upgrade was completed in 2020, removing the bottlenecks that used to add an hour to this journey; modern coach services are now genuinely 9 hours rather than the 10 to 11 hours of older timetables. Greyhound and Premier hop-on hop-off passes start to make sense if you plan to stop at Port Macquarie or the Coffs Coast. Book a window seat on the right-hand side from Newcastle onwards for ocean views, particularly through the Crowdy Bay and Hat Head sections. Coffs Harbour drop-off is at the railway station on the south side of town; taxis are available but consider walking 15 minutes to the harbour foreshore if you are checking into accommodation there.
