Brisbane to Cairns: Bus or Fly? The Honest Comparison

Bus or flight from Brisbane to Cairns: 28 hours from $99.98 versus a two-hour hop. When the coach genuinely wins, when it doesn't, and the widest fare spread on the network.

We run a bus site, and we'll say this plainly: if all you need is to be in Cairns, fly. Brisbane to Cairns is about 1,700 kilometres of Bruce Highway, the through coach takes roughly 28 hours and 40 minutes, and the flight takes a little over two. No amount of enthusiasm for the window seat changes that arithmetic, and pretending otherwise would waste your time and our credibility. But "all you need is to be in Cairns" is doing a lot of work in that sentence, and for a surprising share of travellers it's false. The coach wins on this corridor in four specific situations, loses in the rest, and the fare spread between operators is the widest on the entire network, which makes the price answer far less obvious than it looks. This is the comparison, honestly weighed.

The numbers first

The coach corridor has three operators, and their current floor fares could hardly be further apart: FlixBus from $99.98, Premier from $307, and Greyhound from $555. That is not a typo. It's the same road and the same towns, priced by three companies with three different models. FlixBus and Greyhound price dynamically, so those floors are the cheap seats booked well ahead; Premier's fare is steadier and, because it doesn't surge, is often the one still available at short notice.

We don't quote airfares, because they move daily and any number we printed would be wrong by the time you read it. What we can say is the shape of the market: multiple airlines fly the route several times a day, fares range from genuinely cheap sale seats to several hundred dollars on peak dates, and the cheap ones require the same two-to-four-week booking discipline that FlixBus's do. Compare on the day for your dates; the coach's advantage, where it has one, is never a single number.

When the flight wins

Most of the time, and we'll say why rather than mumble it.

You're going to Cairns, not through it. If the reef, the Daintree or a flight home is the point and the coast in between isn't, 28 hours on a coach buys you nothing but fatigue. Two hours in the air, a night's sleep, and you're on the reef the next morning.

Your time is worth more than the fare gap. Even against a cheap coach seat, the flight saves a full day and a night. For anyone on a fixed holiday of a week or two, that day is worth more than the difference.

You're travelling with kids. An overnight coach with a toddler is an act of endurance we wouldn't wish on anyone. The flight is short enough to survive.

You're going in stinger season and just want to get there. The wet season, from roughly November to April, makes the coastal stopovers less appealing anyway; our wet season guide explains why. If the towns between aren't going to hold you, the argument for riding past them evaporates.

When the bus wins

Four cases, and they're not edge cases.

The trip is the point. This is the big one. Noosa, Hervey Bay and K'gari, Rockhampton, the Whitsundays from Airlie Beach, Townsville and Magnetic Island: every one sits on the coach road, and the split tickets between them floor from $19.99 a hop. Fly and you see none of them. Our ten-day itinerary is the full version; the short version is that the coach turns a transfer into a holiday, and the flight can't.

You're carrying real luggage. Coach allowances are generous and included; airline checked-bag fees on a cheap fare can add a meaningful chunk to the ticket, and a backpacker with a pack, a daypack and a surfboard is exactly the passenger the airlines charge most. The coach has a luggage bay and a shrug.

You're going somewhere between Brisbane and Cairns. There is no airport in Noosa, Hervey Bay, Agnes Water, Airlie Beach itself or Mission Beach. The coach stops at all of them. For those destinations the flight isn't a competitor; it's a flight to somewhere else plus a bus anyway.

Airfares have spiked and you have a flat-fare fallback. School holidays, a Cairns festival, the end of the dry season: when airfares run away, Premier's steady $307 or FlixBus's floor, if it's still there, becomes a ceiling you can rely on. Flat fares are worth most on exactly the dates the airlines punish.

The luggage and the leftovers

Two smaller points deserve their own space, because they tip the decision for specific travellers more often than the headline numbers do. The first is luggage. Airline fares at the cheap end are built for a carry-on and a laptop; add a checked bag each way, a second one, or anything oversized, and the "cheap" flight quietly climbs while the coach fare sits still. Backpackers, surfers, families with a pram and anyone relocating with more than a weekend's clothes should price the bags before the seats.

The second is arrival logistics. A flight lands you at Cairns Airport, a taxi or shuttle from town; the coach sets you down in the city itself, in the evening, walking distance from the esplanade hostels and hotels. At the Brisbane end the same holds in reverse. It is a small saving in dollars and a larger one in the tired hour after a long trip, and it's the kind of detail the ticket price never shows.

The middle path: fly one way, ride the other

The best answer for a lot of travellers is neither. Fly into Cairns, do the reef and the Tablelands while you're fresh, then ride south with stopovers as far as time allows, flying home from wherever you finish. Or the reverse: ride the trail north, arrive in Cairns with the reef as the finale, and fly home from there. Either way you get the towns and only one long day on the highway, and you avoid the through service's overnight entirely.

Even the partial ride is worth structuring. Cairns to Townsville is five hours from $31.99, which puts Magnetic Island within a day trip of the tropics and a flight home from Townsville's airport; Cairns to Airlie Beach is nine hours, enough for a Whitsundays finish. The coach doesn't have to be all or nothing, and the corridor's operators all sell the short legs at short-leg prices.

What the overnight coach is actually like

If you do ride it through, know what you're buying. The service runs overnight with meal and driver stops, seats recline but don't lie flat, and the coach fills and empties at each town, so the seat next to you changes and the lights come up more than once. Our overnight bus guide covers the survival kit. The honest experience is neither the horror people imagine nor the romance the brochures sell: it is a long, mostly dull, entirely survivable night, and by the second morning you are in the tropics with the whole coast in your legs. Some travellers love it. Most would rather have broken it.

Frequently asked questions

Is the bus cheaper than flying from Brisbane to Cairns?

Sometimes. FlixBus's $99.98 floor beats most airfares outside sale periods; Greyhound's $555 floor loses to nearly all of them. Premier's $307 sits in the range where peak-date airfares overtake it. Check both for your dates; the answer genuinely changes week to week.

How long is the bus from Brisbane to Cairns?

About 28 hours and 40 minutes on the through service, running overnight. The flight is a little over two hours in the air, or five to six door to door once airport time is included.

Why is the Greyhound fare so much higher than FlixBus?

They price differently. Greyhound's floor on this corridor currently reflects its dynamic model and its network positioning; FlixBus competes on the headline fare. Both are real prices from our route data at the fact-check date, and both move. The route guide shows the live spread.

Can I break the coach journey?

Yes, and it's the reason to take it. Buy separate tickets per leg and stop in Noosa, Hervey Bay, Rockhampton, Airlie Beach and Townsville; the split floors add up to about $196 across six hops. A pass product can also cover it; our pass explainer compares.

Is the overnight bus safe?

Yes. Australian long-distance coaches are professionally driven under strict fatigue rules, and this corridor runs daily. Our safety guide covers the detail. The risk is boredom, not danger.

What about the train?

The Spirit of Queensland runs Brisbane to Cairns as a rail alternative with lie-flat rail beds, but it's a separate operator outside our coach data, typically dearer than the cheapest coach fares and around 24 hours. It's a fine third option for rail fans; we haven't compared it here.

One last honest note on timing. The coach's strongest season is the dry, from roughly May to October, when the coastal stopovers are at their best and the Whitsundays water is clear; that is also when airfares to Cairns run dearest, so the two curves cross in the coach's favour. In the wet, the reverse: cheap flights, damp stopovers, and a strong case for simply arriving.

The decision routine takes a minute. Is Cairns the destination or the finish line? Are you carrying more than a carry-on? Do any of the towns between call to you? Are airfares for your dates sane? Two or more answers pointing at the coach, ride it, ideally in pieces. Otherwise fly, with our blessing, and save the highway for a trip that deserves it.
