The through coach from Brisbane to Cairns is one of the great endurance rides of the Australian network: about 1,700 kilometres of Bruce Highway, roughly 28 hours and 40 minutes end to end, and a fare that starts at $99.98. It is also, frankly, the wrong way to do it. Every worthwhile stop on the Queensland coast sits directly on that road, the coaches already pull into each of them, and splitting the run into six hops across ten days costs remarkably little more than sitting through the lot. This is the itinerary we'd hand a friend with ten days, a backpack and no car: six legs, five towns, the current floor fare on each, and the honest maths on where the money goes. Our Sydney to Cairns itinerary covers the longer version; this is the northern half done properly.

The route and the money, up front

Three operators run the corridor: FlixBus, Greyhound and Premier, all calling at the same string of towns. FlixBus and Greyhound price dynamically, so their cheap seats reward booking a couple of weeks ahead; Premier's fares hold steadier. The current floors per leg, from our route data at the fact-check date, are these.

The six hops, current floor fares
LegFromTimeCheapest operator
Brisbane to Noosa$19.992h10FlixBus
Noosa to Hervey Bay$21.994h53FlixBus
Hervey Bay to Rockhampton$27.985h55FlixBus
Rockhampton to Airlie Beach$64.996h20FlixBus
Airlie Beach to Townsville$28.993h42FlixBus
Townsville to Cairns$31.995h00FlixBus

Add those up and the split-ticket floor comes to about $196. The through fare on the same corridor floors at $99.98 with FlixBus, but rises to $307 with Premier and $555 with Greyhound, so depending on which operator's cheap seats you catch, breaking the journey costs you either roughly a hundred dollars more or a couple of hundred less than riding it through. Either way, five towns for the price of a night or two of accommodation is the best value on the east coast.

Route guide

The through run: Brisbane to Cairns from $99.98, ~28h40

From $14328h 40m1,693 km

A practical note before the days begin: the floors above are FlixBus's, and on the longer legs, notably Rockhampton to Airlie Beach, the gap between the cheapest and the dearest operator narrows to a few dollars. When the dynamic fares have climbed, Premier's steadier price is the fallback. Every route guide linked below shows the live spread.

Days 1 to 2: Brisbane to Noosa

Leave Brisbane on a morning service and you're in Noosa by lunch: about two hours up the Bruce Highway and across to the coast, from $19.99. Con-x-ion also serves the corridor, and Greyhound and Premier both call, so departures are plentiful. Noosa is the soft landing: Hastings Street for the window shopping, Main Beach for the calm swim, and the coastal walk through Noosa National Park to Hell's Gates, which is the best free morning on the Sunshine Coast. Our Noosa guide covers the town in full, including where the coach actually stops.

Route guide

Leg one: Brisbane to Noosa from $19.99

From $232h 10m139 km

Two nights here is the right number. The second day is for the Everglades or a paddle on the river if the budget stretches, or simply the national park walk done slowly with a swim at Tea Tree Bay at the end of it. Book the onward leg before you get too comfortable; the northbound morning services out of Noosa carry the whole trail's traffic.

Days 3 to 4: Noosa to Hervey Bay

This leg runs just under five hours from $21.99, inland past Gympie and back to the coast at Hervey Bay, the whale-watching capital and the gateway to K'gari, the world's largest sand island. From roughly July to early November the humpbacks rest in Platypus Bay with their calves, and Hervey Bay's cruises are the closest encounters on the coast; outside those months the island is the reason to stop.

Route guide

Leg two: Noosa to Hervey Bay from $21.99

From $314h 53m182 km

K'gari is a four-wheel-drive-only island, which for a coach traveller means a tour: day trips and multi-day tag-along trips leave from Hervey Bay's River Heads ferry, and they are the single biggest line item on this itinerary. Budget for it honestly. Two nights in Hervey Bay gives you a full island day without a dawn start after a coach afternoon.

Days 5 to 6: Hervey Bay to Rockhampton

The trail's quiet leg, and the one most itineraries skip. About six hours north from $27.98, through the cane and cattle country of the Wide Bay and Capricorn coast, crossing the Tropic of Capricorn just south of Rockhampton. Rocky is a working beef city rather than a resort, which is exactly why it deserves a night: prices drop, the Fitzroy River frontage has been rebuilt into a decent evening walk, and the Capricorn Coast beaches at Yeppoon are a local bus ride away.

Route guide

Leg three: Hervey Bay to Rockhampton from $27.98

From $265h 55m389 km

We'd give it one night rather than two unless the Yeppoon beaches or the Capricorn Caves are calling. The point of stopping is less Rockhampton itself than what it does to the next leg: without it, Hervey Bay to Airlie Beach is a twelve and a half hour haul. With it, you get two manageable days and a real Queensland town in the middle.

Days 6 to 8: Rockhampton to Airlie Beach

The longest and dearest hop, about six hours twenty from $64.99, and the one where the operator gap narrows most: Greyhound floors at $77 and Premier at $84 here, so if FlixBus's cheap seats have gone, the difference is small. The reward at the other end is the Whitsundays. Airlie Beach is the mainland base for the islands, the reef and Whitehaven Beach, and it's the one place on this itinerary where we'd argue for three nights.

Route guide

Leg four: Rockhampton to Airlie Beach from $64.99

From $656h 20m481 km

Day one is arrival and the lagoon, the free saltwater swimming pool on the foreshore that solves the stinger-season problem. Day two is the boat: a day trip to Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet is the postcard, and a two-night sailing trip is the backpacker rite of passage if the budget allows. Day three is recovery, the Bicentennial Walkway to Cannonvale, and the onward coach in the afternoon. Our Airlie Beach guide has the boat options and the sums.

Days 8 to 9: Airlie Beach to Townsville

A short leg, under four hours from $28.99, and the town most people ride through. Don't. Townsville is North Queensland's working capital, the Strand is a genuinely good waterfront, and twenty minutes offshore sits Magnetic Island, where koalas sleep in the gums above the Forts Walk and the bays are quiet enough to have to yourself. Our Townsville and Magnetic Island guide makes the full case.

Route guide

Leg five: Airlie Beach to Townsville from $28.99

From $473h 45m280 km

One night in town and one on the island is the ideal split, but if ten days is firm, a single night with the island as a day trip works: the ferry is frequent and the Forts Walk takes a couple of hours. Townsville is also the cheapest bed on this itinerary north of Rockhampton, which matters after Airlie.

Days 9 to 10: Townsville to Cairns

The final leg, about five hours from $31.99, up through the sugar towns of Ingham and Tully, past the rainforest slopes of the Cassowary Coast and into Cairns. The road gets greener with every hour, and by the time the coach reaches the Cairns esplanade the dry cattle country of Rockhampton feels like a different continent. It is, climatically.

Route guide

Leg six: Townsville to Cairns from $31.99

From $435h350 km

Cairns is the end of the line and the launch pad for the reef, the Daintree and the Tablelands, so the tenth night is the start of another trip rather than the end of this one. Our Cairns without a car guide picks it up from here. If you have a day in hand, spend it on the reef; if you have three, add Cape Tribulation.

Beds, budget and booking

Ten days on this trail runs to nine or ten nights of accommodation, and the hostel network is the reason the itinerary works for backpackers: every stop has beds within walking distance of the coach stop, and the prices roughly track the towns, cheapest in Rockhampton and Townsville, dearest in Noosa and Airlie Beach. Book the Airlie and Noosa nights ahead in the peak months; leave Rockhampton loose.

On tickets: book each hop a week or two ahead as your plans firm rather than all six at once. The dynamic operators reward that window, and it leaves room to add a night where the trip is going well. If you'd rather commit once, a Greyhound pass on this corridor trades price certainty for flexibility; our pass explainer runs the comparison. And insure the trip: ten days of boats, islands and highway is exactly the profile a backpacker policy exists for.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the bus take from Brisbane to Cairns?

The through service takes about 28 hours and 40 minutes, running overnight with meal stops. Split into the six legs above, the riding time is roughly the same but spread across ten days, which is the whole argument of this itinerary.

Is it cheaper to buy one ticket or six?

It depends which operator's cheap seats you catch. The through fare floors at $99.98 with FlixBus, while the six split tickets floor at about $196 combined; but the through fare with Premier is $307 and with Greyhound $555, so against those the split is cheaper. Check the live spread on the route guide before deciding.

Can I do the trip in fewer days?

Yes, but each town you cut turns two short legs into one long one. Dropping Rockhampton makes Hervey Bay to Airlie Beach a twelve-hour day; dropping Townsville makes Airlie to Cairns nine hours. Seven days is the realistic minimum with all the big stops; ten is comfortable.

Which direction is better, north or south?

Northbound is the classic, ending in the tropics with the reef as the finale, and the fares are near-identical each way. Southbound suits travellers flying into Cairns and out of Brisbane, and has the small advantage that Airlie Beach falls mid-trip rather than at the exhausted end.

Do I need to book the coaches in advance?

Two weeks ahead is the sweet spot on FlixBus and Greyhound, whose fares rise as departures fill; Premier's steadier fares only need a few days outside school holidays. The northbound morning services out of Noosa and Airlie Beach are the busiest on the trail.

What about the towns the coach passes but I haven't listed?

Rainbow Beach, Bundaberg, Agnes Water and Mackay all sit on or near the same road and all have coach stops. Rainbow Beach and Agnes Water are the two we'd add with a twelfth and fourteenth day; our Agnes Water guide covers the latter.

The Bruce Highway is not a scenic drive. It is a long, flat, functional road that happens to connect the best string of coastal towns in the country, and the coach network stops at every one of them. Ride it through and you'll remember the seat; break it six times and you'll remember Whitehaven, the whales, the koalas on Magnetic Island and the moment the cane fields turn to rainforest. Same road, same fares within a hundred dollars. Take the ten days.
