When it saves money
East Coast Whimit is the right product for most backpackers doing the classic Melbourne → Sydney → Brisbane → Cairns route, especially with stops along the way. The 30-day at $489 fits the standard 4-week east coast itinerary and beats individual ticket pricing once you take 4+ long-haul legs.
When to skip it
If your itinerary is just one or two long-haul legs (e.g. Sydney→Brisbane direct, then a flight onward), individual tickets are cheaper than even the 7-day pass. The 60-day at $561 is rarely worth the premium over the 30-day unless you genuinely need a longer travel window.
Better alternatives
Travelling beyond the east coast (Top End, Outback, WA): upgrade to the National Whimit. NSW-only or NSW + VIC: NSW TrainLink Discovery Pass at $275 (1 month) is cheaper if your trips are within that smaller network. Sydney to Brisbane only: Premier's Sydney↔Brisbane Value Pass at $115 is dramatically cheaper for that single corridor.
