Winton's Outback Festival runs for five days in late September of odd-numbered years, and it is exactly what it promises: iron-man events, yarn-spinning, whip cracking, outback athletics and the Australian Dunny Derby, in which teams race outhouses on wheels down the main street of a town 1,400 kilometres from Brisbane.
Around 10,000 people make the trip, roughly a tenfold multiplication of Winton's population. The town is the birthplace of Waltzing Matilda and the home of the Age of Dinosaurs museum, so the festival sits on real outback-heritage bones. It is a long way inland, and that is precisely the point.
