Tamworth Country Music Festival
Ten days in mid-to-late January
The Tamworth Country Music Festival is the largest country music festival in the southern hemisphere, taking over the city for ten days in mid-January. Peel Street fills with buskers from dawn, hundreds of gigs run across pubs, clubs and halls, and the festival culminates in the Golden Guitar Awards, Australian country music's biggest night.
Around 300,000 visits make January the season that defines Tamworth. Much of the street program is free, and the buskers include future stars working their way up. Summer heat is serious inland, so pace yourself between the midday verandah gigs and the big evening shows.
