Port Fairy Folk Festival
Labour Day long weekend, March (4 days)
The Port Fairy Folk Festival has run every March long weekend since 1977, filling a historic fishing village at the end of the Great Ocean Road with four days of folk, roots and world music. Arena stages carry the headliners while the town's pubs, halls and streets host hundreds more performances.
Around 40,000 people attend, more than ten times the town's population, and the festival's volunteer-run character has survived its growth. Weekend tickets and local accommodation sell out months ahead; many regulars book the following year on their way out. The town-and-festival blend is the point: half the music is free in the streets.
